What does it mean if disk is at 100

Video What does it mean if disk is at 100

what does 100% disk usage mean?

100% disk usage means that your disk has reached its maximum capacity, that is, it is fully occupied by one task or another. Each hard drive has a specific read/write speed, and in general, the sum of the read/write speed is 100mbps to 150mbps. If the sum of the read/write speed exceeds 100-150 mbps, then 100% disk usage occurs.

how to detect 100% disk usage

100% disk usage is very annoying as it slows down the speed of the pc. you need to detect and repair it as soon as possible or you might crash your computer at a serious stage.

This is how to detect 100% disk usage:

right click on the taskbar ->select task manager->in the first processes tab, find the disk column. if you are having pc problems, it should show close to 100%. it can stop your pc even if you are not running any programs.

Now that you’ve spotted the problem, here are 4 simple tips to fix 100% disk usage:

#tip 1 to check hard drive for error:

Wouldn’t it be great if all those hard drive errors could be fixed with just a few clicks? that’s exactly what windows built-in chkdsk tool is for. chkdsk can find clusters of errors and file problems. Often, we may not know if our hard drive has a problem until chkdsk finds it.

let’s run chkdsk. there are two ways to do this: graphically and through the command line. to open graphical versions open the file explorer:

click this pc and right-click the drive you want to run chkdsk on. then click on properties in the tools tab, find error checking and press the check button

chkdsk will now start running on windows 10. upon completion it will display a message. if no errors were found, it will say so

If errors are found, you will see the following messages: Please restart your computer to repair the file system. you can reboot immediately or schedule the bug fix on the next reboot.

#tip 2 disable the superfetch service:

superfetch is the technology introduced from windows vista onwards, it makes sure that frequently used data is fetched from fast ram instead of hard drive. boots the speed of the loading time of the application you are using. it will adapt to your usage pattern to account for the times. It has been noted that superfetch is one of the reasons behind 100% disk usage, especially in windows 8 and 10, so it is better to disable it.

To do this, open the command line and enter net.exe stop superfetch

#tip 3 scan for viruses and remove them

Tried all the above methods but it shows 100% disk usage? then there is only one possibility and that is “virus”. the virus could be running in the background consuming your disk. so scan for viruses and remove them with the help of av tool installed on your system or using built-in av.

#tip 4 disable windows search to reduce the load on the system drive

windows search is designed to make finding files on your pc much faster, but a bug in windows 8 and windows 10 shows that it increases the load on the system drive. this makes things slower.

You can disable windows search entirely to fix the error. To do this, simply press start and type services and then click on the icon.

in the “services” window, click on the “standard” tab and find the entry “windows search” and double click on it.

in the next dialog, select the “disabled” option from the dropdown menu. this will prevent windows search from loading after restarting the computer.

Once you’ve completed the above procedure, you can further improve performance by applying this simple built-in windows tool.

defrag your hard drive:

practically, files are not stored in one place, they are stored in different places around turntables. your files are written in “blocks” from one side of the drive platter to the other side. but if your files are fragmented, those files are split into blocks far apart from each other. therefore, it takes longer for your drive to read that file. defragmenting your hard drive can put those blocks in sequential order, so the drive pointer doesn’t have to move all over the disk to read a single file.

note: defragmentation should be done only when fragmentation reaches more than 10%

to start defragmentation in windows 10:

open the disk optimization tool and search for “optimize” or “defragment” in the taskbar

click analyze after selecting your hard drive.

check the percentage of fragmented files in the results

If it looks like you need to defrag the disk, click optimize.

When windows ends, your drive should say 0% fragmented in the drive optimization utility.
